Hunger Games

Suzanne Collins

Recommended by: Sheila U

In a not-too-distant future, the United States of America has collapsed, weakened by drought, fire, famine, and war, to be replaced by Panem, a country divided into a Capitol and 12 districts. A 13th District once existed; but was obliterated by the Capitol in order to subdue the citizens of the other Districts.  Each year, two children from each district are selected by lottery to participate in The Hunger Games. Part entertainment, part brutal intimidation of the subjugated districts, the televised games are broadcast throughout Panem as the 24 participants are forced to fight to the death, with all citizens required to watch. When 16-year-old Katniss's young sister, Prim, is selected as the mining district's female representative, Katniss volunteers to take her place. She and her male counterpart, Peeta, the son of the town baker who seems to have all the fighting skills of a lump of bread dough, will be pitted against bigger, stronger representatives who have trained for the Games their whole lives. This book will definitely resonate with the generation raised on reality shows like 'Survivor' and 'American Gladiator.'  The first in a trilogy; a movie adaptation is scheduled for release March 23, 2012.  Read the book before you see the movie!

The Best Of Me

Sparks, Nicholas

Recommended by: Nancy B

Nicholas Sparks does it again.  I believe this is the best novel he has published. It has past teen loves who come together for a brief time and I would not have guessed the ending, nor will I divulge it.  This is a must read.

12 Rounds

Recommended by: Earnestine B

12 Rounds is one of the newest movies we have at the library. It stars WWE wrestler John Cena as New Orleans's policeman Danny Fisher. He foils a multi-million heist and the thief's girlfriend is killed in the process.

A year later the thief escapes from prison and come after Cena for revenge. He kidnaps Cena's girlfriend and makes Cena play 12 rounds of dangerous feats to save his girlfriend.

It has lots of action and explosions so if that sounds like something you would like to watch. Check it out.

A SHARE IN DEATH

Deborah Crombie

Recommended by: Earnestine B

This is the first in the Superintendent Duncan and Sargent Gemma James series. Kinkaid is off on holiday at his cousin's time share. At the meet and greet cocktail party, he meets a young man working at the hotel. He finds himself liking his young man. Unfortuately, the next morning he finds the young man dead in the hotel's whirlpool bath.

Eventhough, he is on vacation, he is looking into the case much to the dislike of the local police. I like this series very much. I had read some of the latter books and decided to start  reading them from the first. If you like English Mysteries you will like this series.

Back Of Beyond

C. J. Box

Recommended by: Nancy B

C. J. Box has written another great mystery. This one takes place in and around Yellowstone National Park. I did not figure out who the bad "guy" was until the end. He held my interest through the entire book. I am working my way through all of Box's Books. I think  "Cold Wind" by Box is tremendous. I will never look at a wind turbine quite the same since I read Cold Wind.
